If you're responsible for sourcing automotive progressive dies, stamping car parts, or automotive aluminum extrusions for a production line that's waiting, this is for you. - If they say "we have capacity," ask when their next open slot is. If it's 8+ weeks out, and you need parts in 6, that's a red flag.

I should add: one supplier I used in 2022 had a great website—impressive CNC car parts gallery, glowing testimonials. But their queue was backed up 14 weeks. Step 2: Check Raw Material Sourcing—For Your Specific Metal

Step 3: Demand a Dual-Sourcing Plan for Rush Orders
Here's something vendors won't tell you: for CNC automotive parts or stamping car parts with tight tolerances, a single-source plan is normal. But for automotive industry stamping jobs with a hard deadline—like a model year launch—you want a backup.
Your ask:
- “If your primary equipment goes down, what's your secondary plan to meet my delivery date?”
- The right answer includes a specific secondary facility or a specific partner vendor they've used before. Not “we'll figure something out.”
- Get the backup plan in writing. (I know, I sound paranoid—but I got burned by a vendor whose “backup” was a 4-hour conversation about who pays for the rush.)
In March 2024, we paid a $400 rush fee for a CNC car parts order. The alternative was missing a $15,000 production run. The rush fee bought certainty—not just speed. That $400 saved us from looking bad to my VP. Put another way: the rush premium isn't paying for faster shipping. It's paying for the supplier to prioritize your order over others. That's a different thing entirely.
Step 4: Build a 'Minimum Valid Order' Acceptance Test
Most buyers focus on price and timeline. The step people skip? Defining what “acceptable” looks like for the first batch—especially for automotive progressive die parts, where tooling can take weeks and the first parts might need adjustment.

1. Believing “standard turnaround” is your turnaround. Many suppliers build in a 1-week buffer. Ask for the actual production window, not the quote date. (I've learned to ask: “If I place the order today, what's the earliest ship date?” Not “what's your standard lead time?”—those are different numbers.)
