What worries me is a leak upstream, near the cab or before the aftertreatment system. Exhaust leaks can pull carbon monoxide into the cabin. If you smell fumes or hear a clear hissing or ticking sound under the dash, stop. That’s not a repair bill; that’s a safety issue.

On a 2024 Duramax, I’d also ask whether the damaged piece is actually a muffler or part of the DPF/SCR assembly. Those components are not cheap, and cutting into them to fix one rusted fitting can create emissions warranty problems. A patch might work as an interim fix, but the long-term fix often means replacing that exhaust section.

Get someone to identify exactly which component is leaking before authorizing work. The extra diagnostic time is cheaper than an unexpected replacement.

5. How to reset fuel filter life on a 2024 Duramax

This is simple once you see it, but the menu path isn’t always obvious. After you install the new fuel filter:

  1. Press the start button with your foot off the brake—or turn the key to RUN with the engine off.
  2. Use the steering-wheel controls to open the Driver Information Center menu.
  3. Go to Settings, then Vehicle, then Maintenance.
  4. Scroll to Fuel Filter Life and press OK/select.
  5. Choose Yes or Reset when the system asks if you want to reset fuel filter life.

If you don’t see that exact path, check the owner’s manual for “Fuel Filter Life System.” On some 2024 Duramax trucks, the option lives under Vehicle Status instead of Settings, especially after a software update.

Don’t reset the monitor before changing the filter. The fuel filter life display is a maintenance tracker, not a physical sensor. Resetting early just means you lose the reminder you’ll need later.

6. Do I have to reset the fuel filter life on a 2024 Duramax every time?

It’s not a legal requirement. It’s a maintenance record. If you don’t reset it, the system keeps using the old fuel-filter life percentage, and your dash will eventually tell you to change a filter that’s already two intervals old. That false alarm causes a lot of unnecessary phone calls.

From a cost view, the real mileage of the filter is more valuable than the dashboard percentage. I write the install date and odometer reading on the filter housing with a paint pen, and I log it in our tracking sheet. Then the reset is the last step of a documented service event, not just a button click.

Yes, take the 30 seconds to reset it. But only after you’ve recorded enough details to back up the reminder.

7. What’s the unsearchable question behind all of these parts purchases?

It’s not “which part should I buy?” It’s “how do I know if that part was actually good?” I track every Bendix part, Vevor pump, and muffler repair in a simple spreadsheet. The columns are: date, odometer, part number, vendor, total cost, failure date, notes.

That sounds boring, but it saved me from the “inexpensive” trap more than once. A $28 rebuild kit that lasted nine months has a worse cost per mile than the $75 kit that lasted two years. A $40 oil pump that failed on a Saturday cost us more in emergency sourcing than the $90 pump with proper specs would have cost.
