If you're a repair shop technician, a fleet manager, or a car owner about to spend money on a control arm replacement, this checklist is for you. I've been a quality control manager in the automotive parts industry for 5 years, reviewing roughly 500 incoming part batches annually. Here's what I look for before I approve any component — including Bendix air governor gaskets, ceramic brake pads, and suspension parts. It's a five-step checklist, and step 4 is the one most people skip.

Last month I visited a muffler shop in Corpus Christi to check on a warranty claim. The owner showed me a Bendix air governor gasket that had failed after 5,000 miles. He was ready to blame the brand, but when we looked closer, the wrong part number had been installed — for a different air system platform. That's the kind of problem this checklist catches.
Step 1: Verify the exact part number, not just the brand
The biggest mistake I see is assuming "Bendix" is enough. Bendix air governor gaskets, for example, come in at least seven variants, each with a different part number and bore size. A gasket for the AD-IS air dryer system won't seal properly on an AD-9. So the first step is to compare the part number stamped on the box to your vehicle's system specification. If you don't have the old part, check the system model number and cross-reference it with the manufacturer's catalog.
What I mean is that the brand name only tells you the quality expectation, not the fit. Even a perfectly made gasket won't do its job if it's the wrong spec. Take this from someone who's rejected a whole pallet of otherwise good parts because the packaging was mislabeled.

Now it's time to look at the part itself. In our 20,000-mile review of Bendix ceramic brake pads, I check three things: the friction material composition, the surface grind pattern, and the bonding of the shim plate. The ceramic compound should feel dense, not crumbly. The grinding marks should be uniform — if you see chatter marks or uneven spots, it's a red flag.
For gaskets and seals, I use a magnifying glass to look for cracks, bubbles, or flash from the molding process. Surface color can also tell you a lot. For instance, Bendix uses a specific blue-gray coating on some air system components. I always carry a Pantone color chart and compare the coating against the standard. (The color tolerance is Delta E < 2; anything above 4 is visible to the naked eye.) That might sound overkill, but in my experience, a slightly-off color often correlates with a non-exact material blend.
Step 3: Perform fit and function tests
Visual inspection isn't enough. For a Bendix air governor gasket, I test the gasket's flexibility and compression set. I press it with my thumb and make sure it bounces back. If it stays compressed, the material is degraded. Then I check the mounting flanges — the gasket has to fit over the locating pins without forcing, and the bolt holes need to align without stretching.
For control arms, the key test is the ball joint. I move the stud through its full range of motion and feel for any notchiness or binding. I also check the torque required to move it — a worn ball joint will feel loose and have excessive play. One time, a customer's car came in for a clunking sound, and the shop had already replaced the control arm once. The new part had a seized ball joint that was actually making the noise worse. A simple functional test would have caught it before installation.
(Note to self: always check the boot. A torn rubber boot on a control arm ball joint means the grease is contaminated, and the joint will fail early.)
Step 4: Verify traceability and certification
This is the step everyone ignores. I get it — you're in a hurry, the part looks good, so why bother? But trust me, traceability is your insurance policy. I once saw a batch of 8,000 Bendix brake pads get recalled because a subcomponent came from a supplier that had changed their heat treating process. The only way to identify those pads on the shelf was to check the lot number stamped on the backing plate. If you install a part without documenting its lot number, you have no way to know if you're part of a recall or not.
I want to see three things: a clear lot number, a country-of-origin mark, and an ISO 9001 certification reference (if the manufacturer is certified, that's a good sign). If you can't find a lot number, that's a red flag. It means the manufacturer doesn't have proper quality traceability systems in place. In my opinion, that's worse than a cosmetic defect.
Step 5: Calculate the total cost of ownership, not just the sticker price
Now let's talk money. A lot of people ask me "how much does it cost to fix a control arm?" The honest answer is: it depends on whether you buy the $40 budget part or the $150 OEM-quality part. But the total cost isn't just the part price. It's the labor, the alignment you'll need afterward, and the probability of a redo.
Here's a story from my early years. I approved a batch of cheap control arms from an unfamiliar brand (against my better judgment). The cost was 30% lower than the standard brand. But within three months, two customers came back with seized ball joints. The shop had to replace the arms under warranty, redo the alignment, and worst of all, they lost trust. In the end, each "cheap" arm cost three times as much as the quality part would have. (That's the penny-wise, pound-foolish lesson I never forget.)
For Bendix products, the price is usually a bit higher than generic brands, but the failure rate is statistically lower. Finally, remember that quality is a brand image issue. If you run a repair shop, the parts you install are your signature.
