I work in automotive metal forming, mostly on stamping dies and production parts. When a customer calls, it's usually because something broke and the deadline is tight. Here are the questions I've been asked most in those calls—including a few where the right answer was that it wasn't really our lane.
What is a Bendix starter?
A Bendix starter is a starter motor with a Bendix drive—the gear that slides forward to meet the flywheel when you turn the key. The name has stuck since the original design appeared in the early 1910s. I don't make complete starters; our press line stamps the steel housings, brackets, and drive components around them. In my experience with rush replacement orders, the most common failure is the drive gear not engaging. If the engine cranks slowly, it's likely the battery; if you get one click and nothing else, suspect the starter.
One thing I tell people: don't replace the whole starter until you've checked the wiring and the battery voltage under load. A bad ground connection can make a good starter act dead. I've delayed a few orders because the customer was about to buy an expensive part they didn't need. That's not bad for business; it's just honest.
So what does Bendix actually make today?
The name appears on a lot of automotive parts, from starter drives to heavy-duty brake pads. There's also a commercial-vehicle braking systems company using the same name. In our shop, we make metal-stamped parts—brackets, heat shields, sensor mounts, precision dies. Beyond stamping, our plant also handles CNC machining, forging, and aluminum extrusions when an assembly needs more than one metal forming process. The lesson from 200+ rush jobs I've handled in seven years is this: the name on the part matters less than the spec behind it. A generic bracket may fit, but if the hole tolerance is off by 0.3 mm, it won't stay tight. That's why I ask for the drawing, not just the part number.

I'm not a brake engineer, so treat this as field experience, not a lab test. The honest review is that Bendix pads are used across a wide range of vehicles and the results split by product line. The severe-duty semimetallic pads hold up well in commercial work. The standard street line is fine for regular commuting if you bed them in properly. What worries me is when someone chooses a performance pad for a truck that carries heavy loads and then blames the pad. Pads are only one part of the system. If the rotor surface is bad or the caliper hangs, a new pad won't fix it. That's a limitation, not a failure. At least, that's been my experience with fleet brake suppliers.
Why does a Dodge Journey catalytic converter fail?
A catalytic converter fails when it gets contaminated or overheated. On a Dodge Journey, the usual triggers are a rich fuel mixture, oil consumption, or a misfire. The converter itself isn't always the root cause. In Q4 2024 aftermarket listings I reviewed, replacement converters for the Journey ranged roughly from $350 to $1,100 for the part before labor. As of January 2025, prices may have changed, so verify current pricing with a supplier before ordering.
It's not a Bendix product—we don't make catalytic converters. But catalytic converter heat shields and mounting brackets are stamped metal, and those are exactly the kind of rush part we do handle. If the converter is gone because the car burned oil, a new converter won't last long. Fix the upstream problem first.
What is the headlight symbol?
If your dash shows a headlight shape with lines pointing down at an angle, that's the low-beam indicator. The high-beam symbol is blue with horizontal lines. The auto-headlight symbol usually has an A inside or next to the headlight. These are position indicators, not warning lights. The warning version is usually a headlight outline with an exclamation mark inside it.
I've stood beside a rental car at dusk while someone tried to turn on the headlights by pulling the turn signal lever. It happens more than it should. If you're new to the car, the quickest fix is to check the switch on the stalk or left side of the dash. The symbol tells you what position it's in.
Wait—what does a stove thermostat have to do with any of this?
Honestly, not much. But the phrase comes up in part searches more often than you'd think. A stove thermostat regulates oven temperature. An engine thermostat controls coolant flow to keep the engine at operating temperature. They both respond to heat, but they are not interchangeable.
In March 2024, a customer forwarded a request for a thermostat with a photo of a stove thermostat and asked if it would work in a car. The answer was no—using it would leave the engine without proper coolant flow—and we helped them find the right contact for stove parts. Looking back, I should have asked for the OEM part number earlier. At the time, the customer's shorthand seemed clear. That mix-up is a good reminder: when you're not sure what you need, one phone call with a part number beats a guess, especially in an emergency.
What should you do when you need a part urgently?
First, don't call five suppliers and tell each one it's an emergency until you've confirmed the part number. In my role coordinating rush orders, I'd rather receive one complete RFQ than five need-it-yesterday calls with partial specs. Send the drawing, the quantity, the deadline, and what the part does. If we can't make it, we'll say so and point you to someone who can. The vendor who says this isn't our strength—here's who does it better—earned my trust for everything else. That's how I want our shop to operate too.
A failed delivery in March 2023 changed how I think about this. A die was 0.2 mm off, the supplier said close enough, and it wasn't. Now we require first-article inspection on every pressing before a full run. It costs a bit upfront, but it's cheaper than a missed deadline and a serious customer.
